Just a reflection

Democratic Leap

High decibel speech may be silver, relative silence is gold. The election campaign, that featured a cacophony of sounds from mass rallies, corner meetings and loudspeakers for more than a month, came to a formal end from midnight Saturday allowing the voters 48 hours before the Constituent Assembly election to reflect on who to vote. Now, in a door-to-door mode of electioneering, the candidates and their supporters are visiting the voters for a face-to-face communication, folding raised hands for an earnest Namaste. The election code of conduct requires that the mass media, the main site for political contestation and electoral communication, also keep mum for the silent period. Accordingly, the volume of headlines screaming about a party or a candidate, the colourful pictures of political leaders on the campaign trail, and their long shots and sound bites, has plummeted for now. Only the social media posts and status updates may not have been affected the same way in observance of the electoral silence.

As more than a month of the campaign closes, the voters are fully assured of the elaborate preparations the government and the Election Commission said they had made for the voting day, that is, tomorrow. No one has any doubt about the election being held, or being free and fair. The observance of the electoral silence shows that the political parties, candidates, the mass media and election managers are all willing to play by the rules of fair elections. Moreover, the campaign blackout has brought the candidates and their supporters face to face with the voters. This is a time when the voters may form new opinions about their candidates and parties for final endorsement. The contestants know this well. That is why they are choosing to meet the local opinion leaders and presenting their most polite face before the voters of their constituency. The last minute work by the candidates to woo the votes can make a real difference between who wins and who loses the elections.

The early election campaign may prove futile for candidates who lose votes of the people waiting until these last hours to decide whom they will vote for. Sleep deprived, candidates, therefore, are doing all they can to bring the swing votes in their favour. Some of them may be indulging in horse trading in hopes of a payoff in CA seats. Leaders of stature should believe in their capacity to win the hearts and minds of the voters through their past good work or promise of doing better in the future. They should rather choose to lose election than earn a bad name for winning through unfair means and processes. The voters also have a duty to endorse candidates on the basis of their belief that after elections, their representatives will be able to deliver on their promises, not on other bases, such as money or muscle power. The silence period gives the people a time to make this and similar reflections about their decision to vote and defeat any lurking fear that holds back our nation from making a democratic leap forward.
